Prof I-Hsiung Ju teaches Waterfalls & Clouds
Master painter of Chinese brush technique I-Hsiung Ju describes in English how to paint and color waterfalls, mists and clouds. He demonstrates distant and close-up waterfalls and the placement and size of rocks, cliffs and rapids. He shows how to create the effects of water and how to create and modify a composition. He explains how to create mist and clouds by adding a wash to the paper. He clarifies the Chinese brush painting and sumi-e rules for his subjects.
Master Chinese brush painter Professor I-Hsiung Ju (朱一雄 or Zhu Yixiong in Pinyin) created this teaching video in 1990. This is a 40 minute excerpt from the full video of 95 minutes. Prof I-Hsiung Ju’s books on the basic subjects o...

    Nice video - I like the grey colors, I use Perussion blue with burned sienna or burned amber or replace the blue with Phatelo blue....very nice browns and grays. Clouds are hard, do not make the mistake to overdo🙂. For waterfall phatello blue with yellow ochre gives a nice light and warm blue....Have fun!

    Amazing video! I’ll definitely try that - though I guess getting the right ink and color tones onto the brush is much harder than what it looks like in the video. Maybe I could try using an old plate (as he does at least with the color) or I could use two different brushes for different ink and color tones.

    • @VirginiaLloydDavies
      @VirginiaLloydDavies 4 месяца назад

      Mixing plates and saucers are a good way to go. Some artists make several different shades of gray on separate saucers, from light to dark, then just add strong black to the tip of the brush. Prof Ju used one brush to create the rocks and waterfalls. He would wait until it was dry before he added color, usually using the same brush. A soft-hair brush or a combination brush works, as does a mountain horse-hair brush. He would use a broad flat brush to add the mist, but you can also use a regular soft brush. Your skill level will improve as you practice. Have fun and enjoy the dance of the brush!

    Great demo, thank you! WHAT KIND OF PAPER DO YOU USE?

    • @VirginiaLloydDavies
      @VirginiaLloydDavies 5 месяцев назад

      Thanks for your kind comment. I use raw (absorbent) rice paper, which is called Xuan or Shuen in Asia. mine is single thickness, but you can also achieve the same result using double xuan. The benefit of the double xuan is that the colors don't spread as much so you can paint a bit slower. Regular watercolor paper does not work because it is not absorbent.

    Teacher, I'd like to ask 2 questios: , which kind and size of brush are you using ? And how do you come up with gray ink? Do you mix white and black ink?

    • @VirginiaLloydDavies
      @VirginiaLloydDavies 7 месяцев назад

      I'm always happy to answer questions. The best Chinese brush for bamboo is one with stiff bristles. You can paint bamboo with any size brush, depending on the size of your paper. Large brushes are most expressive - let your brush dance! Gray ink is simply black ink diluted with water. This way it is transparent. If you add white, it will become opaque. Thanks for asking! Happy painting!

      @@VirginiaLloydDavies Thank you so much Teacher! I have a Medium size Orchid/bamboo brush I bought from Oriental Arts Supply but it's difficult for me to maneuver. I guess I need more practice. Also, I used to mix white with black ink. No wonder the effect was not good. I tried diluting ink in water but it's still black so I added white. Now I know it's not right. Thank you so much for sharing. My deepest gratitude, Teacher! I love your tutorial videos. You're a really excellent Teacher!!!❤️🙏🤗🙏

      @@janten6554 The brush strokes take a while to master. I recommend my students to stand up and make sweeping gestures with your entire arm, first in the air and then with the brush tip touching the paper. Don't think about precision at this point, just get used to the swooping movement. A student roll of rice paper (OAS sells several) may be an easier surface for you to paint on. Keep painting!
